The star has given the complete sum of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which works to save the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

The star was presented with the award on October 16 as his latest record the album was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues had in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation supported locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues stemming from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The idea that money from performances in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, vocalist Cocker stated that the group would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her prize across a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist explained to the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And winners that year M People gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," said singer the singer. "The money was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

In the past week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the second in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
